Quick story…I felt so defeated.
I wasn’t always orderly and neat. I have struggled with organization over the years, but never felt so defeated as I did that day.
I can remember it like it was yesterday. I had just come home from running my daughter’s friend home. We have rushed off to church and managed to miss dinner. Since I didn’t want to send a child home hungry, I did a quick drive-through style supper.
Then, I got the text. My upset husband on the other side of the text told me we were now -$350ish dollars in the checking account. That’s right- a negative balance. Even though payday was the day after, we were already starting out with $350 in overdraft. Sighhhh…
Have you ever done anything like this? I can’t tell you how defeated I felt. I wanted to cry (and later did.) I had allowed my disorganization to hurt our family finances.
Now, truth be told, when you share the checkbook and bank account with someone else, you are both at fault and both responsible for keeping everything in balance. But, in this instance, I had been spending for days without keeping a record of my spending. This error was my fault.
Every single dollar. Every overdraft fee.
The lesson learned here is that organization (or the lack thereof) can actually end up costing you your hard earned money.
So, my challenge to you is this. Do you know where your money is? …Not just the checking account balance. Do you know the purpose of every dollar in that account?
I am not a financial planner by any means, but I can tell you that when your finances are out of order, you will feel it (and so will everyone else in the family.)
