How to Jump Start a Car: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Back on the Road

  1. Safety First:

Before attempting to jump-start a car, prioritize safety for yourself and others. Park both vehicles in a safe location, away from traffic. Turn off the ignition, engage the parking brakes, and put on safety gloves and eyewear. Familiarize yourself with the vehicle’s manual for any specific jump-starting instructions.

  1. Gather the Tools:

To jump-start a car, you’ll need a few essential tools. Ensure you have a set of jumper cables with sufficient length and intact insulation. Additionally, find a functioning vehicle with a charged battery to serve as the booster car. It’s also recommended to have a pair of safety gloves and a clean cloth for wiping any dirt or corrosion.

  1. Identify the Battery Terminals:

Locate the battery terminals in both vehicles. The terminals are usually marked with a (+) symbol for the positive terminal and a (-) symbol for the negative terminal. It’s crucial to identify the correct terminals to ensure a safe and effective jump-start. Red is positive and black is negative. Look for the positive or plus sign and the negative or minus sign on your battery.

  1. Connect the Jumper Cables:

With both vehicles parked and the ignition off, it’s time to connect the jumper cables. Follow these steps:

a. Connect one red clamp of the jumper cables to the positive terminal (+) of the dead battery.

b. Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the booster car’s battery.

c. Connect one black clamp to the negative terminal (-) of the booster car’s battery.

d. Finally, attach the remaining black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block of the dead car. This serves as a grounding point. Do NOT touch these clamps together as it may shock you.

  1. Jump-Start the Car:

Once the cables are properly connected, start the booster car’s engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then, attempt to start the dead car. If it doesn’t start, try revving the engine slightly on the booster car to provide an additional boost. Once the dead car starts, let both vehicles run for a few minutes to charge the battery.

A dead battery is pretty common in the Winter and in colder climates. If the dead car starts, you likely have experienced a dead battery, so drive immediately to an auto parts store and get it checked. The auto parts technician can tell you if the battery still has life in it or if you may have another issue, such as an alternator problem. If it is the battery, the dead battery will need to be replaced immediately. Otherwise, your car will likely not restart once you turn off the ignition and you will have to jump start it again.

  1. Disconnect the Jumper Cables:

Never touch these clamps together as it may cause dangerous sparks or shock you. To safely disconnect the jumper cables, follow these steps:

a. Start by removing the black clamp from the unpainted metal surface of the previously dead car.

b. Then, remove the black clamp from the negative terminal (-) of the booster car’s battery.

c. Next, remove the red clamp from the positive terminal (+) of the booster car’s battery.

d. Finally, detach the red clamp from the positive terminal (+) of the previously dead car’s battery.
