Pumping Gas 101: A Comprehensive Guide on How to Safely Refuel Your Vehicle
- Select the Correct Fuel:
Before you begin pumping gas, ensure you choose the correct fuel for your vehicle. Check your vehicle’s fuel type requirements in the owner’s manual or on the fuel tank cap. Gasoline typically comes in different octane ratings, such as regular, mid-grade, and premium. Select the fuel that matches your vehicle’s specifications to optimize performance and avoid potential engine damage. Diesel vehicles can only run on diesel fuel, and the diesel pump is usually green while the regular unleaded fuel pump handle is usually black.
- Park Safely:
When arriving at the gas station, park your vehicle safely in front of a fuel pump. Ensure that you align your vehicle correctly, allowing easy access to the fuel tank. Be mindful of other vehicles and pedestrians in the vicinity, maintaining a safe distance to avoid accidents or collisions. Remember which side of your car has the gas refuel access and park with that side of the car facing the gas pump.
- Turn Off the Engine:
Before you start pumping gas, turn off the engine of your vehicle. This is an important safety measure to prevent any potential ignition sources near the fuel pump, reducing the risk of fire hazards. Keep your ignition key away from the engine and avoid using electronic devices while refueling. Also, never use a lighter or flame and never smoke near a gas pump.

- Open the Fuel Cap:
Locate the fuel cap on your vehicle and twist it counterclockwise to open it. Set the fuel cap aside in a clean and secure location, such as the top of your fuel tank or a designated fuel cap holder, to avoid misplacing it during the refueling process.
- Pay & Insert the Pump Nozzle:
Most gas pumps require payment prior to refueling. I have a video linked below that is helpful, if you are unfamiliar. You will likely have to insert your card to pay. If you have cash, you will need to pay inside first. You will go inside and tell the cashier how much gas you would like to buy and what pump number you will be using. The pump number is generally in bold numbers at the top of each gas pump. You could say something like, “I’d like $20 on pump 7, please.” The cashier will take your payment and then turn the pump access on for the dollar amount you paid. Usually, the pump will automatically stop fueling once you reach that dollar amount you paid.

With the fuel cap removed, insert the pump nozzle securely into the fuel tank opening. Make sure the nozzle fits properly and is fully inserted to prevent any fuel spillage or leakage. Hold the nozzle firmly during the pumping process to maintain control and prevent any accidental release.
Here is a helpful video to guide you through the process of paying at the pump.
- Start Pumping:
Once the nozzle is securely inserted, you can start pumping gas. Select the desired fuel grade or octane rating on the pump’s keypad if applicable. Hold the pump handle and squeeze the trigger gently to begin the flow of fuel into your vehicle’s tank. Avoid overfilling the tank and monitor the fuel level to prevent spills.
If you are putting gas into a portable gas container, you must place the container on the ground before fueling. Do not attempt to hold it and fuel it at the same time. Watch the fill line carefully so as not to overfill it. If you should have a gas spill, notify the gas station attendant, so it can be safely cleaned.

- Monitor and Stop Pumping:
While fueling, keep an eye on the fuel level gauge on your vehicle’s dashboard or the pump’s display. As the fuel level approaches the desired amount or when the pump automatically stops, release the trigger to stop pumping. Avoid topping off the tank, as it can lead to fuel overflow and potential damage to the vehicle’s evaporative system.
- Replace the Fuel Cap:
After you have finished pumping gas, remove the nozzle from the fuel tank and place it back onto the pump. Securely tighten the fuel cap onto the fuel tank opening by twisting it clockwise. Ensure it is snugly closed to prevent fuel vapor leakage and maintain proper fuel tank sealing.
- Practice Gas Station Safety & Etiquette:
As a responsible driver, it’s important to practice proper gas station safety and etiquette. Avoid smoking, using open flames, or using electronic devices near the fueling area. Dispose of any trash in designated containers and be considerate of other customers waiting to use the pump. Always follow any additional guidelines or instructions provided by the gas station.
