DIY Indoor Fly Trap Ideas:

DIY Indoor Fly Trap 1: Vinegar and Dish Soap Fly Trap
One of the simplest and most effective DIY fly traps can be made using vinegar and dish soap. Here’s how:
- Gather the materials: You will need a shallow dish or bowl, apple cider vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and plastic wrap.
- Pour vinegar into the dish: Fill the shallow dish or bowl with apple cider vinegar, which acts as a strong attractant for flies.
- Add dish soap: Add a few drops of dish soap to the vinegar. The soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, causing flies to sink and drown when they come into contact with the solution.
- Cover with plastic wrap: Place a sheet of plastic wrap tightly over the dish, creating a small opening in the center. Secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band.
- Poke holes in the plastic wrap: Use a toothpick or a small sharp object to poke several holes in the plastic wrap. These holes will allow flies to enter the trap but make it difficult for them to escape.
- Place the trap strategically: Position the fly trap in areas where flies are commonly seen, such as near windows, trash cans, or kitchen countertops.
DIY Indoor Fly Trap 2: Honey or Maple Syrup Fly Trap
Another effective DIY fly trap can be made using honey or maple syrup. Follow these steps:

- Prepare a jar or container: Choose a small jar or container with a narrow opening, such as a mason jar or a plastic bottle with the top cut off. An empty soda bottle will do nicely.
- Apply a sweet sticky substance: Coat the inside of the jar or container with honey or maple syrup. Flies are attracted to the sweet scent and will be lured into the trap.
- Create a funnel: Roll a piece of paper into a funnel shape and insert it into the jar, narrow end down. Make sure the funnel doesn’t touch the sticky substance. You may have to use tape to keep the paper funnel from unrolling.
- Secure the funnel: Tape the edges of the funnel to the jar to hold it in place. The flies will be able to enter the trap but will struggle to find their way out.
- Place the trap strategically: Position the fly trap in areas where flies are active, such as near fruit bowls or areas with food scraps.

Remember, flies are drawn to odors caused by food or odors caused by pets, such as an indoor litter box. Fruit flies are often drawn to fresh fruit that is left out on countertops, such as bananas. Clean the litter box and empty the trash regularly. By implementing these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of house fly infestations and maintain a more fly-free environment in your home.
