S – Specific: A goal should be specific and well-defined. Instead of setting a general goal like “lose weight,” make it specific by stating “lose 10 pounds in three months.” Being specific helps provide clarity and focus.
M – Measurable: A goal should be measurable so that progress can be tracked and evaluated. Establish specific criteria or milestones to assess your progress. For example, “exercise for 30 minutes, five days a week” is a measurable goal.
A – Achievable: A goal should be realistic and attainable. Consider your resources, abilities, and constraints when setting a goal. While it’s good to aim high, setting unattainable goals can lead to frustration. Ensure that your goal is within your reach and aligned with your capabilities.

Developing Self-Discipline using the Pomodoro Technique
What is the pomodoro technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It’s designed to improve focus, productivity, and time awareness. The technique uses a timer to break work into intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.
Here’s how the Pomodoro Technique works:
- Choose a Task: Select a specific task or project that you want to work on.
- Set the Timer: Set a timer for 25 minutes, which is called one “Pomodoro.” During this time, you will solely focus on the chosen task.
- Work on the Task: Dive into the task and work on it without any distractions or interruptions. Stay fully engaged and give it your complete attention for the entire 25-minute interval.
- Take a Short Break: Once the timer goes off, take a short break of around 5 minutes. Use this time to relax, stretch, or do something unrelated to work. It allows your mind to rest and recharge.
- Repeat and Track Progress: After the break, set the timer for another 25 minutes and resume working on the task. Repeat this process of working for 25 minutes and taking short breaks. After completing four Pomodoros, take a longer break of around 15-30 minutes.
