1. Declutter First

The first step to an organized coat closet is decluttering. Take everything out and assess each item. Donate or discard items you no longer use or need. This will create more space and make organizing more effective. Check out my post on 7 Decluttering Mistakes Pro Organizers Never Make.

2. Invest in Quality Hangers

Upgrade your coat hangers to sturdy, non-slip varieties. Consider using hangers that are slim but strong to maximize hanging space. Velvet or rubber-coated hangers prevent clothes from slipping off and maintain the shape of your coats.

If you don’t want to spend any money, you can wrap rubber bands on your coat hangers to prevent clothing slipping off. Another tip is to just use the same color or style of hangers in your closet to make it look more aesthetically pleasing. I use all white plastic hangers and it improves the look.

3. Categorize by Season

Separate your coats and accessories by season. Store off-season items in bins or vacuum-sealed bags to free up space for the current season’s essentials. This makes it easier to find what you need and streamlines the closet’s appearance.

4. Utilize Shelf Dividers

If your closet has shelves, use dividers to create designated sections for different items. This helps prevent items from toppling over and keeps stacks of items neatly separated.

5. Hooks for Easy Access

Install hooks on the inside of the closet door or on unused wall space. Hooks are perfect for hanging bags, scarves, and hats. This not only adds storage but also makes these items easily accessible. This tip is helpful for your children who may not be tall enough yet to reach and hang their coats in the closet. What if you don’t even have a coat closet? Hooks can be installed anywhere that makes sense. We use these in the kitchen as seen below.

6. Shoe Storage Solutions

If your coat closet serves as a general entryway space, incorporate shoe storage. Shoe racks or clear shoe boxes help keep footwear organized and prevent them from cluttering the floor. If you live in a wet climate, a boot tray is a must to protect your floors. Don’t want to buy a boot tray? An old cookie sheet can be spray painted and can become a DIY boot tray.

7. Labeling Bins and Baskets

Use bins and baskets to corral smaller items like gloves, hats, and accessories. Labeling them makes it easy to locate what you need quickly. Transparent containers are especially helpful for identifying contents at a glance. Label these in a way that makes sense to you.

Perhaps you want to label the baskets with what it contains, such as gloves, scarves, hats, etc. Or, maybe you want to label the basket by the owner’s name to keep personal belongings together.

I personally love the look of baskets. You can save money by shopping for baskets to suit your needs at thrift stores. You can still label these with a cute tag that ties onto the basket. Don’t worry if they don’t all match. These baskets can also be spray painted to match your home.

8. Foldable Items and Shelves

For items that don’t need to be hung, consider installing shelves for foldable sweaters, blankets, or bags. Folding neatly prevents items from becoming wrinkled and keeps the shelf space orderly.

Another tip for keeping your coat closet organized is to pay attention to coats and gloves that have clips on them at the wrists. These clips can attach to gloves. Also, the gloves my kids have include clips to attach the gloves together. These clips make it easy for kids and adults alike to not have a glove go missing. It can also make getting ready faster.

Once your coat closet is organized, commit to regular maintenance. Periodically reassess the contents, declutter, and make adjustments as needed. This prevents the space from becoming chaotic again.

Enhance the aesthetics of your coat closet with a few decorative touches. Add a stylish mirror, some artwork, or decorative hooks to make the space more inviting.
