How to Clean Your House and Car After a Beach Trip
1. Shake Out Everything Before You Enter the House
Before you bring the mess indoors:
- Shake out towels, bags, and blankets outside.
- Use a soft brush or broom to knock off sand from shoes, beach chairs, and toys.
- Rinse off any items that came into contact with saltwater, such as snorkels, swim shoes, or boogie boards.
Pro tips:
- Baby powder removes sand from your skin. Keep some with you in your beach bag.
- If you have a portable leaf blower, it works wonders for blowing sand off gear.
2. Clean Out the Car First
Beach mess builds up fast in your vehicle, especially if you’ve been traveling with kids, snacks, and wet swimsuits. Here’s how to clean it quickly and effectively:

Step 1: Remove Trash and Gear
- Empty out coolers, snack wrappers, beach bags, and towels.
- Toss damp items in the laundry immediately to avoid mildew.
Step 2: Vacuum Thoroughly
- Use a shop vac or a vacuum with a hose attachment to clean sand from the seats, floors, and trunk.
- Pay special attention to floor mats and crevices—they’re sand traps. A cleaning brush works well to get into the crevices and loosen the sand. Use the brush first and then vacuum. If your mats are water proof, use soap and water.
Step 3: Wipe Down Surfaces

- Use interior car wipes or a DIY mix of water and vinegar (1:1 ratio) to clean:
- Dashboard
- Door handles
- Console
- Cup holders (check for dried-up sunscreen or soda)
Step 4: Treat Upholstery
- If the seats are fabric, sprinkle a bit of baking soda, let it sit, and vacuum it up to absorb any odors.
- For leather, wipe with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution, then dry thoroughly.

Step 5: Freshen the Air
- Air out your car with the windows down.
- Add a car air freshener or place a small open box of baking soda under a seat to absorb odors.
3. Tackle the Laundry Immediately
Beach towels, swimsuits, and clothes that have salt and sand on them should not sit in your laundry basket or luggage:
- Shake them outside first.
- Rinse suits in cold water to remove salt.
- Wash with a sports detergent or white vinegar to help neutralize odors and remove sunscreen or salt buildup.
4. Clean Sand and Grit From the House
Even if you tried to keep sand outside, chances are it made its way in.

Entryway:
- Vacuum or sweep the entry area.
- Mop with a vinegar-water solution to remove any grime.
- Use a handheld vacuum or dust buster for corners and shoe mats.
Floors:
- Vacuum first to pick up dry sand.
- Follow with a damp mop for tile, vinyl, or wood floors.
- For carpets, sprinkle baking soda, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then vacuum. It helps absorb odors and sand.
Bathroom:
- Rinse out the tub if you washed off post-beach.
- Clean any sand left in the drain or on the floor.
- Disinfect surfaces that came in contact with wet suits or towels.
5. Clean Beach Accessories
Don’t forget to clean the gear before stowing it away:
- Toys and buckets: Rinse with water and mild soap.
- Coolers: Scrub with dish soap, rinse, and leave open to dry.
- Beach chairs: Hose them down and dry thoroughly to prevent rust or mildew.
- Umbrellas or canopies: Brush off sand and ensure they’re dry before storing.
6. Restock and Repack for Next Time
To make your next beach trip even easier:
- Repack essentials like sunscreen, wipes, trash bags, and hand sanitizer.
- Keep a dedicated beach bag or bin ready to go with the clean, dry basics.
- Restock your car with clean towels, a change of clothes, and baby powder—great for removing sand from feet and skin.
Coming home from the beach doesn’t have to mean a sand-covered disaster zone. With a little planning and a post-beach cleanup routine, you can quickly reset your home and car—so you’re ready to do it all again next weekend!
Let the beach vibes stay in your memories, not in your carpets and car seats.
