High humidity and warm temperatures can make it challenging to keep your living spaces smelling clean and fresh. 14 Ways to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh in the Summer Heat
1. Let Fresh Air In (Strategically)
Open your windows during the cooler parts of the day—early morning and late evening—to let fresh air circulate without heating up your home too much. Use window fans or ceiling fans to help push stale air out and bring in fresh breezes.
Pro tip: Cross-ventilation works best. Open windows on opposite sides of the house to allow air to flow through.
2. Use Dehumidifiers to Reduce Moisture

Summer humidity can create the perfect environment for musty smells, mildew, and even mold. A dehumidifier helps reduce moisture in the air, especially in problem areas like basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
Target humidity levels between 30% and 50% to keep odors and mold at bay.
3. Clean Garbage Cans and Drains Weekly
Trash cans, compost bins, and drains are major odor culprits in the summer. Clean and disinfect these areas weekly to prevent smells from building up.
- Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of trash cans
- Run boiling water and vinegar through your drains
- Use lemon peels in the garbage disposal for a fresh scent
4. Launder Linens, Curtains, and Cushions Often

Fabric surfaces absorb smells—especially sweat, cooking odors, and pet dander. Wash lightweight throws, pillow covers, and curtains every few weeks in the summer.
Freshen fabrics between washes by spritzing them with a fabric refresher like Febreeze or using a homemade spray of water, vodka, and essential oils.
5. Keep the Air Flowing with Fans and AC Filters
Keep ceiling fans running to prevent stagnant air and change your HVAC or AC filters monthly during the summer months. A dirty filter can not only make your home smell funky but also reduce indoor air quality.
6. Simmer Summer Scents on the Stove
You don’t need synthetic sprays to scent your home. Simmer fresh ingredients like citrus peels, mint leaves, rosemary, or lavender on the stove to naturally perfume the air.
Bonus: You can also use a slow cooker to safely simmer scents without heating up the kitchen too much.
7. Use Baking Soda and Charcoal to Absorb Odors

Place open containers of baking soda or activated charcoal in problem areas (closets, fridge, laundry room, etc.) to naturally absorb unpleasant smells.
Replace every 1-2 months for best results.
8. Try DIY Potpourri or Scent Jars
Create jars of dried herbs, citrus slices, and whole spices like cloves or cinnamon sticks to keep rooms gently scented. Or make your own gel air fresheners with essential oils and gelatin.
Don’t want to make your own? I get it. I love burning my Bath and Body Works candles or using their plug-ins.
9. Keep Up with Pet Grooming
In the summer, pets shed more and may smell stronger due to the heat. Regular brushing, bathing, and washing their bedding can go a long way in keeping your home from smelling like a kennel. Also, keep you little box clean if you have a cat.
10. Dry Laundry Immediately

Don’t let wet towels or sweaty clothes sit in the hamper too long. They’ll create a sour smell fast in the summer heat. If you can, dry laundry outdoors for that naturally fresh scent.
11. Scented Cleaning Products Help, Too
Use lightly scented or naturally fragranced cleaning products for daily cleaning tasks. Citrus, eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender not only smell refreshing but also have antimicrobial properties.
12. Decorate with Scented Greenery
Plants like eucalyptus, basil, lemon balm, and lavender can help add a pleasant, fresh scent to your home. Plus, many have the added bonus of repelling insects!
13. Wipe Down Door Frames and Window Sills
These areas are often overlooked but collect dust, pollen, and mildew in the summer months. A quick wipe-down with vinegar or a citrus cleaner helps keep the air fresh and reduces allergens.

14. Limit Heat-Producing Appliances During the Day
Ovens, stovetops, and dryers can raise indoor temps and amplify smells. Grill outside, use a slow cooker, or make no-cook meals to keep the house cooler and less odorous.
Keeping your home smelling fresh during the summer doesn’t require fancy air fresheners or constant cleaning marathons. With a little bit of maintenance, airflow, and natural fragrance, your home can stay inviting and clean-smelling all season long.
