14 Simple Things to Declutter Before Christmas
1. Expired Pantry Items
Check tins, jars, and snacks that have passed their best-before date. Toss what you can’t use, and donate unopened extras to a local food drive.
2. Old Christmas Decorations
If the lights don’t work or a decoration no longer brings joy, it’s time to let them go. Create space for pieces that truly make your home festive.
3. Gift Wrap Clutter

Dried-up tape, wrinkled bows, and torn wrapping paper aren’t worth keeping. Sort through and keep only what’s in good shape.
4. Kids’ Toys
Christmas often brings new toys, so go through existing ones with your children. Donate or pass along toys they’ve outgrown.
5. Extra Kitchenware
If you’re hosting, you’ll want a clear kitchen. Remove duplicate utensils, chipped mugs, and unused gadgets.
6. Outgrown Clothes

Winter coats, sweaters, or holiday outfits that no longer fit can be donated now—just in time for someone else to enjoy.
7. Shoes and Boots
Clear out worn-out shoes or pairs that don’t get used. This frees up space in your entryway for winter boots and visiting guests.
8. Holiday Cards From Previous Years
Unless they hold sentimental value, recycle old cards to reduce paper clutter.
9. Paperwork and Mail
Go through piles of mail, expired coupons, and outdated school letters. File only what matters and recycle the rest.
10. Makeup and Toiletries

Toss expired products and half-empty bottles you’ll never use. This leaves room for fresh holiday skincare sets or gifts.
11. Bed Linens and Towels
Keep only what’s in good condition. Donate spares to shelters and create room for fresh, cozy sets.
12. Digital Clutter
Free up storage on your phone or computer by deleting old screenshots, duplicate photos, and unused apps.
13. Books and Magazines
If you’ve read it (or won’t), pass it on. Libraries and charity shops welcome gently used books.

14. Junk Drawer Items
We all have one. Take 20 minutes to toss broken pens, dead batteries, and mystery cables. You’ll thank yourself later.
Decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Tackle one category at a time, and you’ll create a calm, welcoming space before Christmas arrives. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s making room for more joy, connection, and peace this holiday season.
