Currently we are working on how to unclutter the Living Room. The daily task for today, Dec. 12, 2023, is to begin to declutter any stained or torn linens in your living room. Remember, we are focusing on just the living room area, so don’t declutter your whole house. We will cover each room separately.

What Should You Not Do When Decluttering?
1. Attempting to Tackle Everything at Once
Decluttering is a marathon, not a sprint. One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to declutter their entire home in a single day or weekend. This overwhelming approach can lead to burnout and decision fatigue. Instead, break the process into smaller, manageable tasks. Focus on one room or even one category at a time. This way, you’ll make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. What Should You Not Do When Decluttering? Expect to get it all done in a day.
2. Ignoring Emotional Attachments
Our belongings often carry sentimental value, making it challenging to part with them. However, holding onto items solely for emotional reasons can hinder the decluttering process. If an object no longer serves a purpose or brings you joy, consider letting it go. Remember, memories reside in us, not in our possessions. It’s tempting to invest in storage bins, baskets, and shelves before you start decluttering. However, purchasing organizational tools before assessing your needs can lead to unnecessary expenses. Declutter first, and then determine what storage solutions are truly required. You may find that you need fewer containers than you initially thought. What Should You Not Do When Decluttering? Buying tons of storage containers just gives you an excuse to continue to store everything without truly decluttering.
4. Setting Unrealistic Goals
Setting unattainable goals can set you up for disappointment. Avoid creating unrealistic expectations, such as decluttering an entire room in an hour. Instead, establish achievable objectives and celebrate small victories along the way. Real progress takes time, and recognizing your accomplishments will help keep you motivated. Implement daily habits to keep your space tidy and make it easier to stay organized in the long run. Regular maintenance will prevent the need for major decluttering sessions in the future. Also, if you are a person who likes to shop as a hobby, carefully consider your purchases before buying more stuff and undoing the decluttering work you’ve already done.

Effective decluttering requires patience, mindfulness, and a strategic approach. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure a smoother and more successful decluttering experience. Remember, the goal is not just to create a tidy space but also to cultivate a lifestyle that values simplicity and order.

3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina. This is one of the most useful declutter motivation tips. Listen to your body and work at decluttering when you feel the most alert and energized.
4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. This is one specific way for How to Be Ruthless When Decluttering.
5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. The goal is to purge the dead weight. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later. Hacks for Decluttering
Supplies Needed:

3. marker/pen to label boxes
Decluttering Tip: Avoid using storage bins to declutter. Storage bins tend to tell your brain to “store” the items for later. That is just delaying decisions. If you aren’t getting rid of items when you declutter, you are not truly decluttering. This is why I recommend a trash bag, also. A trash bag tells your brain to “trash” the item.
Obviously, recycle if you have that option. The boxes you use should be ones you are willing to part with, so I recommend sturdy cardboard boxes. As to donations, there are many charities that will come pick up your items for you at your home.
I use one in particular where you can book an appointment for pick-up online. This is so convenient, as it saves you the hassle of hauling stuff away yourself. Scheduling that pick-up also motivates you to declutter by a certain date.
Steps for Decluttering
1. Start by eliminating trash first- use a sturdy trash bag
2. Sort items by category if needed so you can see what you have
3.Get rid of items that don’t work or that work poorly, expired items, anything you don’t love, anything that you’ll never use again
4. Box up the donations and trash/recycle the rest
5.Select a charity to donate your items and schedule the pick-up if that is an option
