Cleaning supplies are essential for maintaining a clean and hygienic home, but it’s easy for them to become disorganized and cluttered. A cluttered cleaning supply area can make it difficult to find what you need when you need it and may even lead to unnecessary purchases. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to declutter your cleaning supplies and create a more organized and efficient cleaning routine.

Currently we are working on how to unclutter the coat closet, hall closet, and linen closet. The daily task for today, Oct 10, 2023, is to begin to declutter your cleaning supplies in your closets. Remember, we are focusing on just the hall closet area, so don’t declutter your whole house. We will cover each room separately.

How to Declutter Cleaning Supplies: A 5 Step Guide to Tidying Up

Step 1: Gather All Your Cleaning Supplies

Start by gathering all your cleaning supplies from various parts of your home. This includes cleaning products, tools, brushes, mop heads, sponges, rags, and anything else related to cleaning. Place them all in one central location, such as a table or the floor, so you can see everything you have.

Step 2: Sort and Categorize

Next, sort and categorize your cleaning supplies into groups. Common categories might include:

  1. Cleaning Products: Group all your cleaning sprays, detergents, disinfectants, and other chemicals together.
  2. Tools and Brushes: Gather items like brooms, dustpans, vacuum cleaners, scrub brushes, and dusters.
  3. Cloths and Sponges: Put all your microfiber cloths, paper towels, sponges, and rags in one pile.
  4. Specialized Cleaning Supplies: If you have items like oven cleaner, stainless steel polish, or specific cleaners for certain surfaces, group them together.
  5. Trash and Recycling: Dispose of empty or expired cleaning products and containers responsibly.

Step 3: Evaluate and Eliminate

Now it’s time to evaluate each category of cleaning supplies. Ask yourself the following questions:

How to Declutter Cleaning Supplies: A 5 Step Guide to Tidying Up
  • Have I used this product/tool in the past year?
  • Is this product/tool still in good condition?
  • Is this product/tool redundant (i.e., do you have duplicates)?
  • Is this product/tool safe to use (check for expiration dates)?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” it’s time to let go of the item. Dispose of expired or damaged items safely and consider donating gently used but unnecessary items to a local charity or shelter.

Step 4: Reorganize and Store

After you’ve decluttered your cleaning supplies, it’s time to reorganize and store them efficiently. Consider the following tips:

  1. Use Containers: Invest in clear storage containers or bins to keep similar items together. This makes it easier to see what you have and prevents clutter.
  2. Label Everything: Label containers, especially if they’re not transparent, to quickly identify what’s inside. Labeling also helps family members or housemates find and return items to their proper places.
  3. Utilize Vertical Space: Install shelves, hooks, or racks on your cleaning supply storage area to maximize vertical space. This keeps items off the floor and creates a neater appearance.
  4. Keep Essentials Accessible: Store frequently used items in easily accessible locations. For instance, place daily cleaning supplies under the sink for quick access.
  5. Rotate Stock: Pay attention to expiration dates on cleaning products and replace them as needed.

Step 5: Create a Cleaning Schedule

To prevent future clutter and chaos, establish a cleaning schedule. Regular maintenance will help you keep your cleaning supplies organized and ensure you always have what you need on hand.

Decluttering your cleaning supplies not only creates a tidier space but also makes your cleaning routine more efficient. By categorizing, evaluating, and reorganizing your cleaning supplies, you’ll be better equipped to maintain a clean and hygienic home without the frustration of searching for the right tools. Take the time to declutter and create a functional cleaning supply storage system, and you’ll reap the benefits of a clutter-free and efficient cleaning routine.

Steps to Take & How to Declutter Cleaning Supplies

1.Only spend time on your specific daily task.

2.Do not get side-tracked or distracted.

3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina. This is one of the most useful declutter motivation tips. Listen to your body and work at decluttering when you feel the most alert and energized.

4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. This is one specific way for How to Be Ruthless When Decluttering.

5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. The goal is to purge the dead weight. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later. Read on for more declutter motivation tips and my room specific deep clean checklist, though, as you will begin cleaning after your declutter.

High Impact Decluttering Tips for How to Declutter Cleaning Supplies

Supplies Needed:

1. boxes -preferably ones you can donate (Avoid plastic storage bins because you may be tempted to just store the items and not part with them.)

2. sturdy trash bags

3. marker/pen to label boxes

Decluttering Tip: Avoid using storage bins to declutter. Storage bins tend to tell your brain to “store” the items for later. That is just delaying decisions. If you aren’t getting rid of items when you declutter, you are not truly decluttering. This is why I recommend a trash bag, also. A trash bag tells your brain to “trash” the item.

Obviously, recycle if you have that option. The boxes you use should be ones you are willing to part with, so I recommend sturdy cardboard boxes. As to donations, there are many charities that will come pick up your items for you at your home.

I use one in particular where you can book an appointment for pick-up online. This is so convenient, as it saves you the hassle of hauling stuff away yourself. Scheduling that pick-up also motivates you to declutter by a certain date.

How to Declutter Cleaning Supplies

1. Start by eliminating trash first- use a sturdy trash bag

2. Sort items by category if needed so you can see what you have

3.Get rid of items that don’t work or that work poorly, expired items, anything you don’t love, anything that you’ll never use again

4. Box up the donations and trash/recycle the rest

5.Select a charity to donate your items and schedule the pick-up if that is an option
