The daily task for today, Oct 12, 2023, is to begin to declutter any unwanted hats, gloves, and scarves in your hall closets. Remember, we are focusing on just the hall closet area, so don’t declutter your whole house. We will cover each room separately.

7 Tips to Declutter the Coat Closet and Create a Functional Space
- Start with a Clean Slate
The first step to decluttering any space is to take everything out of the closet. This allows you to see what you have and gives you a clean slate to work with. Lay out your coats, shoes, bags, and other items in a designated area, so you can assess their condition and decide what to keep and what to discard.
- Sort and Purge
Now that everything is out of the closet, it’s time to sort through your items. Create three piles: keep, donate, and toss. Be ruthless during this step. Ask yourself if you’ve worn the item in the last year, if it still fits, and if it’s in good condition. Donate items that no longer serve you, and dispose of any items that are damaged or beyond repair.
- Consider the Season
When decluttering your coat closet, consider the current season and your local climate. Store off-season items in a separate location to make room for the items you use daily. Vacuum-sealed bags are a great way to store off-season clothes and keep them in pristine condition.

- Invest in Storage Solutions
Maximize your closet’s potential by investing in storage solutions such as shelves, hooks, and hangers. Adjustable shelves allow you to customize the space to fit your needs. Hooks are perfect for hanging bags, scarves, and hats. Additionally, slim, non-slip hangers save space and keep your coats in great shape.
- Organize by Function
To maintain an organized coat closet, arrange your items by function and frequency of use. For example, keep your everyday coats and jackets within easy reach, while formal or occasional wear can be placed on higher shelves. Group similar items together, making it easier to find what you need.
- Utilize Baskets and Bins
Baskets and bins are an excellent solution for corralling small accessories, such as gloves, hats, and scarves. Label each container for easy access and quick identification. Bins can also be used to store shoes or seasonal items like umbrellas.
- Regular Maintenance
The key to a clutter-free coat closet is regular maintenance. Take a few minutes each month to assess the contents of your closet and make any necessary adjustments. This will prevent clutter from piling up and keep your space organized year-round.

A decluttered coat closet not only streamlines your daily routine but also creates a sense of order in your home. By following these tips and investing a little time and effort into organizing your coat closet, you can enjoy a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space. So, roll up your sleeves, clear out the clutter, and transform your coat closet into an organized haven for your outerwear and accessories.
Steps to Take & Tips to Declutter the Coat Closet
1.Only spend time on your specific daily task.
2.Do not get side-tracked or distracted.
3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina. This is one of the most useful declutter motivation tips. Listen to your body and work at decluttering when you feel the most alert and energized.
4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. This is one specific way for How to Be Ruthless When Decluttering.
5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. The goal is to purge the dead weight. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later. Read on for more declutter motivation tips and my room specific deep clean checklist, though, as you will begin cleaning after your declutter.
High Impact Decluttering Tips to Declutter the Coat Closet
Supplies Needed:
1. boxes -preferably ones you can donate (Avoid plastic storage bins because you may be tempted to just store the items and not part with them.)
2. sturdy trash bags
3. marker/pen to label boxes
Decluttering Tip: Avoid using storage bins to declutter. Storage bins tend to tell your brain to “store” the items for later. That is just delaying decisions. If you aren’t getting rid of items when you declutter, you are not truly decluttering. This is why I recommend a trash bag, also. A trash bag tells your brain to “trash” the item.
Obviously, recycle if you have that option. The boxes you use should be ones you are willing to part with, so I recommend sturdy cardboard boxes. As to donations, there are many charities that will come pick up your items for you at your home.
I use one in particular where you can book an appointment for pick-up online. This is so convenient, as it saves you the hassle of hauling stuff away yourself. Scheduling that pick-up also motivates you to declutter by a certain date.
Tips to Declutter the Coat Closet
1. Start by eliminating trash first- use a sturdy trash bag
2. Sort items by category if needed so you can see what you have
3.Get rid of items that don’t work or that work poorly, expired items, anything you don’t love, anything that you’ll never use again
4. Box up the donations and trash/recycle the rest
5.Select a charity to donate your items and schedule the pick-up if that is an option
