10 Easy Cleaning Hacks for Your Living Room
1. Declutter First
The first on my list of easy cleaning hacks for your living room involves clutter. Before diving into cleaning, take a few minutes to declutter. Remove unnecessary items, organize loose papers, and put away items that don’t belong in the living room. This simple step will make the cleaning process more efficient.
2. Dust Like a Pro
Dusting is a quick and effective way to give your living room a fresh look. Use a microfiber cloth or a duster to capture dust on surfaces, including shelves, coffee tables, and electronic devices. Don’t forget to dust lampshades and decorative items. For those out of reach areas, try attaching a microfiber cloth to a swiffer sweeper as seen below. Also, check out my post on “What Causes Dust in the Home and How do I Minimize It?“.

3. Revitalize Upholstery
Refresh your furniture by giving upholstery some attention. Use a fabric cleaner appropriate for your furniture type to remove stains and spills. For a budget-friendly alternative, a mixture of water and mild dish soap can work wonders on most fabrics. To freshen the fabrics, try making some homemade febreeze by mixing fabric softener and water into a spray bottle. Spray this on your fabric sofa and pillows for a nice clean scent.

4. Spotless Windows and Mirrors
Achieve crystal-clear windows and mirrors with a simple solution of water and vinegar. Mix equal parts in a spray bottle, apply, and wipe with a lint-free cloth or newspaper for a streak-free shine. You can also use a microfiber cloth attached to a swiffer to reach those higher areas. This is the hack I use to clean the glass in my bathroom.

5. Floor TLC
Different flooring requires different care. Vacuum carpets and area rugs, and mop hard floors with a suitable cleaner. For hardwood floors, a mixture of water and a few drops of gentle dish soap can do wonders. Check out my post here on my DIY All-Purpose Floor Cleaner.
6. Gadget Cleaning
Living rooms often house a variety of electronic devices. Turn off and unplug your TV, gaming consoles, and other gadgets before gently cleaning them with a microfiber cloth. I like using a sanitizing wipe on remotes and light switches. These items rarely get cleaned but can be very dirty and overlooked. Pay attention to vents and openings.
7. Magic of Baking Soda
Baking soda is a versatile cleaning agent. Sprinkle it on carpets before vacuuming to neutralize odors. Mix it with water to create a paste for cleaning grout or removing stubborn stains from upholstery.

8. Freshen the Air
A clean living room should smell as good as it looks. Consider using natural air fresheners like citrus slices, essential oils, or simmering herbs on the stove to create a welcoming atmosphere. Orange peels and cinnamon can be boiled in water on the stovetop to make a pleasant aroma.

9. Regular Maintenance
Make cleaning a breeze by incorporating regular maintenance tasks. Wipe down surfaces daily, vacuum or sweep as needed, and address spills promptly to prevent stains. I use a robotic vacuum to help with this. It essentially does the work for me.
10. Enlist Help
Finally, don’t hesitate to enlist the help of family members or roommates. Dividing tasks makes the process quicker and more enjoyable. Check out my post on how to get your kids to help with chores.

By incorporating these easy cleaning hacks into your routine, you can enjoy a pristine living room without spending hours on end. A clean and organized space sets the stage for a relaxing and enjoyable home environment. Happy cleaning!
