Welcome to the Year Long Thorough Declutter Series! We will be starting in the laundry room and patio this month. Each day is dedicated to spending only 30 minutes decluttering your specific daily task. We will be working 5 days a week, so you can take 2 days to enjoy time with your loved ones.

  • First, let’s define what we mean by clutter. Clutter can refer to any excess items or mess in your home or workspace that is not essential for your daily functioning. This can include piles of paperwork, clothes on the floor, dishes in the sink, or knick-knacks on your shelves.
  • Now, let’s dive into why clutter is bad for your health. For starters, clutter can be a significant source of stress. According to a study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Review, cluttered spaces can lead to increased cortisol levels, which is a hormone associated with stress. When you are constantly surrounded by clutter, it can be challenging to relax and feel calm, leading to chronic stress.
  • In addition to stress, clutter can also impact your physical health. Cluttered spaces are more challenging to clean, leading to increased dust and allergens, which can worsen asthma and allergies. Piles of clutter can also be a breeding ground for pests, including rodents and insects, which can carry harmful diseases.

  • Furthermore, clutter can impact your mental health. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that people with cluttered homes reported higher levels of depression and anxiety. Clutter can make it difficult to focus and can even lead to feelings of shame and embarrassment.

So, what can you do to declutter your space and improve your health? Here are some tips:

  1. Start small. Don’t try to tackle your entire house or workspace at once. Begin by decluttering one area at a time, such as a single drawer or shelf.
  2. Create a system. Decide what items you want to keep, donate, or throw away. Use boxes or bags to separate these items.
  3. Stay organized. Once you have decluttered an area, make sure to keep it organized. Use storage containers or labels to help you stay on track.
  4. Get rid of excess items. If you have items you no longer need or use, consider donating them to a local charity or selling them online.

Why Clutter is Bad for Your Health

  1. US consumers buy 40% of the world’s toys, but bear only 3% of the world’s children.
  2. Most people wear 20% of their clothing 80% of the time. (source )
  3. 9.4% of U.S. households rent a storage unit. (source)
  4. People do not look at 80% of the papers and information they keep.(source)
  5. The average American house is double the size it was in the 1950s–and getting bigger. (source.)

Today, we’ll lay out the solutions for the steps to declutter using my tips on Why and How to Declutter a House. Plus, we’ll look at a few ways to answer the concern of Why Clutter is Bad for Your Health and what you can do about it.

A few guidelines to keep you on task: 

1.Only spend time on your specific daily task. 

2.Do not get side-tracked or distracted. 

3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina. 

4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. Recruit help if you are stuck in the decision process. 

5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later.

Your task today for today, September 10th is to: Declutter any unused laundry detergents and stain removal products.

  • Declutter any clothes detergents that don’t clean well.
  • Declutter any that cause you allergies.
  • Get rid of any you have had but not used in a year.
