If you’re feeling overwhelmed by clutter, starting the decluttering process can be the hardest part. But don’t worry, with the right approach, decluttering a room can be a manageable task. Here are some tips to help you learn how to start decluttering a room.

Welcome to the Year Long Thorough Declutter Series! We will be starting in the laundry room and patio this month. Each day is dedicated to spending only 30 minutes decluttering your specific daily task. We will be working 5 days a week, so you can take 2 days to enjoy time with your loved ones.
Ignore the dates within this post. Each year we do the declutter series, so the dates won’t coincide from year to year. How to Start Decluttering a Room
- Set a Goal: Before you start decluttering, set a goal for the room. This will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the process. Consider what you want the room to look like and how you want to use the space.
- Gather Supplies: Gather the supplies you’ll need before you start decluttering. This may include trash bags, boxes for donations, and cleaning supplies. Having everything you need on hand will make the process more efficient.
- Start Sorting: To declutter a room, you’ll need to sort through all of the items in the room. Start by separating items into three piles: keep, donate/sell, and throw away. Be honest with yourself about what you really need and use. Consider the 80/20 rule: we only use 20% of our possessions 80% of the time.
- Take it One Area at a Time: To prevent feeling overwhelmed, break the room down into smaller areas and focus on decluttering one area at a time. For example, start with a single drawer or shelf before moving on to larger areas.
- Remove Clutter: Once you’ve sorted through all of the items in the room, it’s time to remove the clutter. Dispose of items in the “throw away” pile and donate or sell items in the “donate/sell” pile. If you’re unsure about whether to keep an item, ask yourself when was the last time you used it.
- Organize: After removing the clutter, organize the remaining items. Use storage solutions like bins, baskets, and shelves to keep items neat and tidy. Avoid overfilling storage spaces or buying new storage solutions until you’ve fully decluttered the room.

By following these tips, you can start decluttering a room and make it a manageable task. Remember to set a goal, gather supplies, sort through items, take it one area at a time, remove clutter, and organize the remaining items. With a little effort, you can create a more organized and stress-free living space.

Today, we’ll lay out the solutions for the steps to declutter using my tips on Why and How to Start Decluttering a Room. Plus, we’ll look at a few ways to answer the concern of How Clutter Affects You and what you can do about it.
How to Start Decluttering a Room
A few guidelines to keep you on task:
1.Only spend time on your specific daily task.
2.Do not get side-tracked or distracted.
3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina.
4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. Recruit help if you are stuck in the decision process.
5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later.
How to Start Decluttering a Room
Supplies Needed:
1. boxes -preferably ones you can donate (Declutter Tips and Ideas: Avoid plastic storage bins because you may be tempted to just store the items and not part with them.)
2. sturdy trash bags
3. marker/pen to label boxes
How to Start Decluttering a Room
1. Start by eliminating trash first- use a sturdy trash bag
2. Sort items by category if needed so you can see what you have
3.Get rid of duplicate items, broken items, outgrown clothes and shoes, anything you’ll never use again.
4. Box up the donations and trash/recycle the rest
5.Select a charity to donate your items and schedule the pick-up if that is an option
