Today, we’re looking at how to clean a dishwasher. We’ve all had a similar experience with a poorly performing dishwasher. The dishwasher cleaning cycle has ended, and your dishes are still dirty. The dishwasher itself may be to blame. But, before you replace the dishwasher or call a professional for help, let’s troubleshoot a few ideas.
If your dishwasher is not cleaning well and is leaving food particles, the filter within the pump assembly might need to be cleaned. You have the ability to save the cost of having your filter cleaned professionally by cleaning it and assessing it yourself.
This article is going to help you to find and clean the filter on your dishwasher. First, consult your owner’s manual for instructions on your specific dishwasher upkeep and how to access the filter. The filter in a dishwasher is essential since it keeps the dishes clean as it accumulates food particles.

A dirty food trap is the easiest place to start if your dishes aren’t getting clean in your dishwasher. Start there, first.
If the filter becomes clogged, then it will impede the dishwasher’s cleaning action. Just follow these steps to clean the filter in your dishwasher. To prevent it from becoming clogged frequently, be sure to rinse your dishes with water before loading them in your dishwasher.
Here are a few steps you can try that are common to maintaining and cleaning many makes and models of dishwashers:
1. Start by eliminating the lower wash basket from the dishwasher.
2. Remove the spray cap by turning it counter clockwise and lift this spray off of the pump.
3. You might need a screwdriver to remove any screws that are holding the pump cover down. Note that the pump cover has to be attached the same manner it was removed, so pay close attention to aid with the reinstallation process.
4. Under hot running water, clean this filter with a brush.
An old toothbrush or nail brush works very well for this task.

5. If you’re unable to see the small holes of the filter due to the food debris, then you’ve found the reason that your dishwasher isn’t cleaning well. This is what’s slowing down the water flow throughout the wash pump.
6. Before reinstalling, use a pair of tweezers to remove any food particles that can be clogging the lower wash arm.
7. Check if the holes in your spray arm are clogged. You can use a toothpick to unclog these holes if you see debris.
8.Run a Cleaning Cycle: Some dishwashers have a special cleaning cycle that is designed to remove buildup and odors. If your dishwasher has this feature, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for running a cleaning cycle. Alternatively, you can add a dishwasher cleaning tablet or a cup of white vinegar to the bottom of an empty dishwasher and run a hot water cycle.
So, now that you’ve cleaned and put your dishwasher back together, go right ahead and start a normal wash cycle. Following this full cycle, you should now be able to hear the water being sprayed in your dishwasher with a far stronger force than before this filter was cleaned.

From personal experience, I have also found that a low quality detergent can be to blame if your dishes aren’t getting clean. I like saving money and using store brands and generic brands, but the name brand dishwasher detergent seems to do a better job for me. You should experiment with different dishwasher detergent brands to see if this is your issue. I have found the powder varieties do a better job than the liquid types.
I hope this information has been helpful and has saved you the cost of a repair.
