How to Remove Pet Urine Odor
Understanding the Problem
Pet urine contains uric acid, which, when it breaks down, releases ammonia and mercaptans — compounds responsible for that unpleasant odor. Moreover, if not cleaned promptly and thoroughly, pet urine can seep into carpets, furniture, and other porous surfaces, making it challenging to eliminate the odor completely.

Immediate Action
- Act Quickly: The sooner you address a pet urine accident, the easier it will be to remove the odor. Blot up as much urine as possible using paper towels or a clean cloth.
- Avoid Ammonia-Based Cleaners: While it may seem counterintuitive, using ammonia-based cleaners can actually amplify the odor since ammonia is also present in urine. Opt for enzymatic cleaners specifically designed to break down pet urine stains and odors.
Deep Cleaning Techniques

- Enzymatic Cleaners: Enzymatic cleaners contain bacteria that feed on the organic matter in pet urine, effectively breaking it down and eliminating the odor. Follow the instructions on the cleaner carefully for best results.
- Vinegar and Baking Soda: A mixture of vinegar and baking soda can neutralize pet urine odors. First, blot the area with vinegar, then sprinkle baking soda over it. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight before vacuuming it up.
- Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: Mix hydrogen peroxide with a small amount of dish soap and apply it to the affected area. Let it sit for a few minutes before blotting it up with a clean cloth.
Carpet and Upholstery Care
- Steam Cleaning: Steam cleaning is highly effective at removing pet urine odors from carpets and upholstery. Rent a steam cleaner or hire a professional service to deep clean your carpets periodically.
- Professional Cleaning Services: In severe cases or for persistent odors, consider hiring professional carpet cleaning services. They have specialized equipment and expertise to thoroughly clean and deodorize your carpets.
Preventive Measures

- Training and Routine: Consistent training and establishing a routine for your pets can help minimize accidents. Take your pet outside frequently, especially after meals and naps, and reward them for going potty in the designated area.
- Use Pet-Friendly Products: Choose cleaning products that are safe for pets and avoid harsh chemicals that may irritate their skin or respiratory system.
- Protective Coverings: Consider using waterproof or washable covers for furniture and bedding to prevent urine from seeping into the fabric.
Dealing with pet urine odor requires patience and persistence, but with the right techniques and products, you can effectively eliminate odors and keep your home smelling fresh. Remember to act quickly, use appropriate cleaning solutions, and consider deep cleaning methods for stubborn stains. By implementing preventive measures and establishing a routine, you can minimize future accidents and maintain a clean and odor-free living space for both you and your beloved pets.
To Remove Pet Urine Smell
Pet urine on your carpet is a pesky problem. Not only is it disgusting to walk on, but the odor is foul. Let’s look at a few ways to remove pet urine odor from your carpets.

One potential problem with urine odor removal from carpet is the urine spots might not always be readily visible. Sometimes, the stain might not be readily seen by the naked eye, and that is even more problematic when the carpet is brown or orange in color.
The remedy to this is to utilize an ultraviolet or black light to locate the urine spots. It is essential to utilize a high intensity UV source of light if there conflicting lighting in the room. You can use a black light like the one seen below. These can be found in your pet stores in the aquarium supplies.
Coffee Tannin should be sprayed on the stain to decompose the smells and residue after the problem area is identified. Most cleaning or janitorial supply stores will sell suitable coffee tannin or urine treatment spotters that will do the job. You can also find these products at a pet supply store, also.
The compound should be left to react for at least ten minutes and should be groomed into the fibers. Rinse the region with spray and water after treating it with the urine removal complex. Leave this on the carpet for fifteen minutes or longer for better results.
The last step is to clean the carpeting with the steam cleaner. Deep steam cleaning equipment is your preferred method to best clean it deeply and ensure the pet urine odor is removed. In cases of deep contamination, a disinfectant can be sprayed over it or can be injected into the region.
If the pet urine odor issue is really extreme, it may need to be sprayed onto the carpet backing. Odor replacements should not be used, since they don’t remove the odor. They just postpone the problem.
When all else fails to correct your problem, replace your pad under your carpet. Care for the back and substrate by peeling the carpet back, and after treatment, reinstall and clean the carpet. Sprinkle the carpet with baking soda after it dries, and then vacuum excess.
If your pet is left for long periods of time at home alone, you will likely want to use some urine absorbing puppy pads to give your furry friend a place to urinate indoors. If you are trying to train your dog to not use the carpet, place a puppy pad on the area where he has urinated in the past.
I also like to keep these puppy pads beneath my area rugs, in case our dog has an accident. This way, your floors beneath the area rug stay protected from the moisture.
If this is happening frequently, you’re going to have to replace your flooring to remove pet urine odor, which can be very expensive. This may be impossible if you are renting your space. Speak to a specialist at your local pet supply store for effective ways to prevent pets from urinating in the same spot twice.
We have had experience with our dog wetting the same area multiple times. What works for us is to lay down a puppy pad each night or if we’re away for the day. She uses that puppy pad each day in that assigned spot, which saves us from having to clean the carpet repeatedly. It’s also paced on a hard, tile floor, which makes clean up much easier.
If you aren’t sure where to lay the puppy pad, choose the place your dog has urinated on before. They are sensitive to the scent and will usually return to the same spot, in our experience. We also keep bedroom doors closed to keep her off the carpet.
