It’s hot outside, and that means more time spent cooking outdoors on the grill. Using the grill is a tasty cooking option, but it gets pretty dirty quickly. Carbon deposits and grease can begin to build up on the grates of the grill. Today, we’ll cover how to clean a grill.

The grill not only looks unsightly when it’s dirty, but it can also harbor bacteria.  When that happens, it means it’s time to clean the grill.

For Safety: Make sure the grill hasn’t been used just prior to cleaning and is fully cooled before you start to clean it.

Cleaning a grill is essential for maintaining its performance and ensuring food safety. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you clean your grill effectively:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Grill brush or scraper
  • Bucket
  • Dish soap
  • Sponge or cloth
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Aluminum foil
  • Stainless steel cleaner (optional)
  • Paper towels or clean rags
  • Gloves (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions for How to Clean a Grill:

1. Pre-Cleaning Preparation:

  • Turn off the grill: Ensure the grill is completely cool before you start cleaning. For gas grills, turn off the gas supply.
  • Remove grill grates and other removable parts: Take out the grates, flame tamers, and any other removable components.

2. Cleaning the Grill Grates:

  • Soak the grates: Fill a bucket with warm water and dish soap. Place the grates in the soapy water and let them soak for about 15-30 minutes.
  • Scrub the grates: After soaking, use a grill brush or a scraper to remove any remaining food particles and grease. For tough spots, a paste of baking soda and water can be applied and scrubbed with the brush.
  • Rinse and dry: Rinse the grates thoroughly with clean water and dry them with paper towels or a clean rag.

3. Cleaning the Interior:

  • Remove debris: Use a grill brush or scraper to remove any loose debris from the interior surfaces of the grill, including the burners and the bottom tray.
  • Wipe down surfaces: Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Dip a sponge or cloth in the solution and wipe down the interior surfaces. For stubborn spots, apply a paste of baking soda and water, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub and wipe clean.
  • Clean the burners (for gas grills): Remove the burners if possible and clean them with soapy water and a brush. Ensure all burner ports are clear of obstructions.

4. Cleaning the Exterior:

  • Wipe down the exterior: Use a sponge or cloth with soapy water to clean the exterior surfaces. For stainless steel grills, a stainless steel cleaner can be used to polish and protect the surface.
  • Rinse and dry: Rinse with clean water and dry with paper towels or a clean rag to prevent water spots.

5. Reassemble the Grill:

  • Once all parts are clean and dry, reassemble the grill by putting the grates and other components back in place.

6. Final Touch:

  • Oil the grates: Before using the grill again, apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the grates to prevent rust and food sticking.

Tips for Maintaining a Clean Grill:

  • Regular cleaning: Clean your grill after each use to prevent buildup and make deep cleaning easier.
  • Cover your grill: Use a grill cover to protect it from the elements when not in use.
  • Season the grates: Regularly oil the grates to keep them in good condition and prevent rusting.

By following these steps, you’ll keep your grill in top condition, ensuring it’s always ready for your next barbecue.

How to Clean a Grill Naturally using just Dish Soap

1. With a wire brush, brush the grates each time before cooking. To deep clean the grates, you’ll want to take the grates off of the grill and onto an outdoor surface, first.

2.Use your wire brush to scrub off loose dirt. Then, mix up some liquid dish soap and water and thoroughly cover the grates. Make sure you choose a good grease fighting dish soap. Tip: If you have a shallow kid’s pool, that would be a perfect place to soak the grates in the dish soap and water. If not, a large bucket would work, as well.

3.After soaking the grates, scrub them again with the dish soap and the wire brush. Rinse clean with a water hose and repeat the scrubbing as needed.

4. The exterior of the grill can be cleaned with dish soap and water, also. The stainless steel variety can be cleaned up using a stainless steel cleaner.
