Basic Manners: Life Skills Everyone Should Master

  1. Saying “Please” and “Thank You”

One of the most basic manners is saying “please” and “thank you.” These simple phrases can make a significant difference in how others perceive us. Saying “please” when making a request shows that we respect the other person’s time and effort. Saying “thank you” when receiving something or being helped shows gratitude and appreciation.

  1. Using Proper Greetings

Greeting someone with a smile and a friendly “hello” or “good morning” can set the tone for a positive interaction. It shows that we acknowledge the other person’s presence and value their company. Using proper greetings can be especially important in professional settings, such as job interviews or business meetings. If this is your first time meeting someone, a handshake would be recommended. Use a slightly firm grip but do not overly squeeze their hand. This communicates respect and confidence.

  1. Being Punctual

Being on time is another important aspect of good manners. It shows that we respect other people’s time and that we are reliable. Being late can cause inconvenience and may create a negative impression. If we know we will be late, it is polite to inform the other person in advance. Check out my post on time management here.

  1. Listening Carefully

Good manners also involve active listening. When we listen attentively to what others are saying, we show that we respect their opinions and that we are interested in what they have to say. Listening carefully can also help us avoid misunderstandings and improve our communication skills.

  1. Avoiding Interrupting

Interrupting someone while they are speaking is impolite and disrespectful. It can also disrupt the flow of the conversation and make it difficult for everyone to communicate effectively. If we have something to say, it is best to wait until the other person has finished speaking before we speak up.

If you are in a group setting and someone else is dominating the conversation, wait for a pause, and then ask another group member a question about themselves. This causes the overly talkative person to acknowledge that there are others who may have something to share. It also makes the quieter person feel like they are included in the conversation. If you are the overly talkative person, be mindful to let others speak.

  1. Using Proper Table Manners

Table manners are another essential aspect of good manners. They include using utensils properly, keeping your voice down in public places, and not talking with our mouths full. I would also add that cell phone use in public spaces, and especially restaurants, is frowned upon. The reason is that we generally speak louder than we realize, and everyone around you is secretly wishing that cell phone speaker would stop or take the conversation somewhere more private. Using proper table manners shows that we respect others’ company and that we understand how to behave in social situations.

7. Avoid using cell phones when with someone

Cell phones are great for communication, but not if it detracts from the person you are with. Constantly looking at and checking your cell phone while you are with someone send the wrong message to the person that you are with. If you absolutely must check your phone, make it brief and apologize to the person you are with. This lets them know you respect them and value your time together.

8. Follow Through on Commitments

Making a plan and following through is essential. When you schedule a time to meet with someone and when you commit to an obligation or event, do it! Showing up is a sign of maturity and reliability that you keep your commitments. People who make plans and then cancel frequently gain a reputation for it and will likely not be invited back. Similarly, if you make a commitment to do something, make certain that you do it. Others are depending on you. Be dependable and reliable.

In conclusion, basic manners are crucial in our daily lives. They can help us establish positive relationships, avoid misunderstandings, and show respect for others. By practicing these simple manners, we can create a more pleasant and enjoyable environment for ourselves and those around us.
