  1. Excessive Furniture:

One of the quickest ways to open up your living room is by removing unnecessary furniture. That is why it is first on my list of things to get rid of in your living room. Take a critical look at your seating arrangements, side tables, and other pieces. If there are items that rarely get used or simply create obstacles in the room, consider parting ways with them. Embrace a more spacious and streamlined design that allows for easy movement and a comfortable flow.

  1. Outdated Decor:

Outdated decorations are next on my list of things to get rid of in your living room. Trends change and we change, and what was once fashionable might now feel outdated. Take a close look at your decor items, such as throw pillows, wall art, and decorative objects. If they no longer resonate with your style or the current design trends, it might be time to refresh your space with more contemporary and visually appealing elements.

  1. Non-Functional Electronics:

Broken electronics are next on my list of things to get rid of in your living room. Obsolete or broken electronic devices can easily accumulate in the living room. Old DVDs, VHS tapes, or outdated gaming consoles are examples of items that may be taking up valuable space without providing any real value. Dispose of or donate these items to free up space and create a more organized and functional living area.

  1. Unread Magazines and Newspapers:

Magazines and newspapers can quickly pile up, creating visual clutter in your living room. Take the time to go through your reading materials and recycle or donate the ones you no longer need. Consider transitioning to digital subscriptions for a more sustainable and clutter-free reading experience.

  1. Mismatched or Worn-Out Textiles:

Evaluate the condition of your rugs, curtains, and throw blankets. Worn-out or mismatched textiles can make the space feel disorganized and less cohesive. Excessive blankets are also on my list of things to get rid of in your living room. If you have more blankets than you need, consider donating them.

  1. Dusty or Unused Books:

Bookshelves often become a haven for dusty, unread books. Declutter your shelves by donating books you no longer need or have already read. Keep only the ones that hold sentimental value or contribute to the overall aesthetics of your living space.

  5. The average American house is double the size it was in the 1950s–and getting bigger. (source.)

A few guidelines to keep you on task: 

1.Only spend time on your specific daily task. 

2.Do not get side-tracked or distracted. 

3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina. 

4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. Recruit help if you are stuck in the decision process. 

5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later.
