How to Clean Out Your Home Office in 5 Steps
Step 1: Prepare Your Supplies
Before diving into the cleaning process, gather all the necessary supplies. You’ll need:
- Cleaning products (multi-surface cleaner, glass cleaner, disinfectant wipes)
- Trash bags or bins
- Storage solutions (shelves, cabinets, storage boxes)
- Labels and markers
- Microfiber cloths
- A vacuum or broom and dustpan
Having all these tools at your disposal will make the process smoother and more efficient.

Step 2: Declutter Your Workspace
The first step to cleaning your home office is decluttering. Go through every item in your office and decide what to keep, toss, or donate. Here are some tips for decluttering:
- Be ruthless: If you haven’t used an item in the past year, consider letting it go.
- Create designated zones: Group similar items together, such as office supplies, paperwork, and personal items.
- Digitize where possible: Scan important documents and store them digitally to save physical space.
- Donate or recycle: Any items you no longer need, but are still in good condition, can be donated. Anything that can’t be donated should be properly recycled.

Step 3: Deep Clean Your Space
Once you’ve decluttered your home office, it’s time to give it a thorough cleaning. Follow these steps:
- Dust and wipe down surfaces: Start by dusting your furniture and wiping down all surfaces. Don’t forget to clean your computer monitor, keyboard, and phone.
- Clean windows and mirrors: Use glass cleaner to make your windows and mirrors sparkle.
- Vacuum or sweep the floor: Give your office floor a good cleaning. If you have a carpet, consider using a carpet cleaner.
- Disinfect high-touch areas: Wipe down doorknobs, light switches, and other high-touch surfaces with disinfectant wipes.

Step 4: Organize Your Office
With a clean slate, it’s time to reorganize your home office for maximum efficiency. Here are some organizational tips:
- Invest in storage solutions: Shelves, filing cabinets, and storage boxes can help you keep your space neat and organized.
- Label everything: Clearly label your storage containers and folders so you can easily find what you need.
- Create a system: Develop an organization system that works for you. This could include color-coding, alphabetical order, or grouping items by project.
- Keep your desktop clean: Make an effort to keep your physical desktop clear of clutter. Use desk organizers to keep essential items within reach.

Step 5: Maintain Regular Cleaning Habits
Cleaning out your home office is not a one-time task. To maintain a clutter-free and organized workspace, create regular cleaning habits. Dedicate a few minutes each day or a couple of hours each week to tidying up your office. This will prevent the accumulation of clutter and dust.
In conclusion, a clean and organized home office can significantly enhance your productivity and overall well-being. By following these steps and maintaining good cleaning habits, you’ll create a workspace that’s conducive to focused and efficient work. So, roll up your sleeves, grab your cleaning supplies, and get ready to transform your home office into a productive haven.
A few guidelines to keep you on task:
1.Only spend time on your specific daily task.
2.Do not get side-tracked or distracted.
3.Work within a time of day that you have the most energy and stamina.
4.Avoid thinking too long about whether to keep or discard an item. Recruit help if you are stuck in the decision process.
5.Avoid cleaning during your declutter. Getting rid of the clutter is your priority. Cleaning can be accomplished later.
We are working in the home office this week. Your task today for today, February 3rd is to: Declutter any dried out pens and markers.

Bonus tip: Scan all your paper files all with your smart phone into my favorite “paperless” phone app – Evernote. Even if you plan to keep some important documents, this a great way to keep those items stored digitally in case of a fire or natural disaster.
