Since It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought it would be prudent to examine the effects of clutter on your mental health.

New research reveals its better to live a less cluttered life. While this might not sound surprising, the reality is many peoples lives are full of clutter. Your capability to think clearly and live an organized lifestyle depends upon your capability to navigate throughout the clutter.

Less is more, as they say. Whenever you think of the word clutter, your first association can be the inside of a hoarders home. This kind of intense chaos has been popularized in films and television.

Nevertheless, clutter doesn’t have to be that extreme to have a serious impact on your life. Researchers at the University of Mexico examined how clutter compromises an individuals perception of home, and eventually emotions of satisfaction with life.

  5. The average American house is double the size it was in the 1950s–and getting bigger. (source.)

The purpose of the study was to understand how exactly clutter may interfere with a person’s capability to enjoy being in their environment. The study discovered that clutter was negatively correlated to the psychological sense of feeling at home and eventually affected well being.  

Clutter often sneaks into our lives as we naturally want to fill our personal spaces with too many things. It can threaten to physically and psychologically entrap an individual in dysfunctional home environments that contribute to personal distress and emotions of displacement and alienation.

In addition, getting rid of clutter appears to be a key factor with regards to emotions of happiness. While the process of decluttering can be tedious at times, the results are worth the hard work.

Here are 2 good reasons to start ridding your home of clutter:

1. Low subjective well being – Living in clutter makes it hard to have a connection with your home. Your home should be a place to escape the outside world and feel a sense of pride and relaxation.

Having too many things in too small of a place will make you seem like your home is your enemy, not your friend.

2. Unhealthy eating – Believe it or not, clutter affects your eating routine. A 2017 study revealed that individuals would actually eat more snacks if the environment they live in is chaotic and stressful. The participants were disorganized and messy.

They found that individuals are likely to eat more when they feel out of control in a cluttered situation. Not as efficient visual processing – It’s hard to decipher peoples emotions when your surroundings are cluttered. Mental Clutter is a mind-set wherein you cannot inhibit irrelevant information.

Streamlining in your home benefit both your physical and cognitive capabilities and having too much clutter has the opposite effect. Overall, clutter might not feel like a big deal, however it truly impacts your life and your mental state. The time is now to declutter your home and start living.
