How to Declutter Your Entire Home

How to Declutter Your Entire Home

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to declutter your entire home:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Start by defining your decluttering goals. Determine what you want to achieve and visualize how you want your home to look and feel after the process.
  2. Create an Action Plan: Divide your home into manageable sections, such as rooms or specific areas. Prioritize which spaces to tackle first based on their level of clutter or your personal preferences. Or, you can use my declutter plan.
  3. Gather Supplies: Before you begin decluttering, gather essential supplies such as boxes, trash bags, labels, and cleaning materials. Having everything on hand will streamline the process.
  4. Sort and Categorize: Within each designated space, sort your belongings into categories. Common categories include keep, donate/sell, trash, and relocate. Assess each item and decide which category it belongs to.
  5. Make Quick Decisions: When sorting through items, aim to make quick decisions. Avoid getting stuck on sentimentality or indecision. Trust your instincts and remember your decluttering goals.
  6. Declutter Room by Room: You can use my declutter plan.
    • Kitchen: Clear countertops of unnecessary items, discard expired food, and donate or sell unused appliances or dishware.
    • Bedroom: Donate or sell clothes and accessories you no longer wear, declutter bedside tables, and organize drawers and closets.
    • Living Room: Remove excess decor, declutter entertainment centers, and tidy up bookshelves.
    • Bathroom: Discard expired toiletries, declutter cabinets, and organize towels and personal care items.
    • Home Office: Sort through paperwork, discard outdated documents, organize office supplies, and create a functional workspace.
    • Garage: Sort tools, sports equipment, and other items, discard broken or unused items, and organize remaining belongings.
  7. Dispose of Clutter: Properly dispose of items in the trash or recycling bins. Donate or sell items that are in good condition but no longer serve you. Find local charities or organizations that accept donations.
  8. Organize and Store: Once you’ve decluttered each space, it’s time to organize what remains. Utilize storage solutions such as bins, shelves, and drawer organizers to keep items neatly arranged.
  9. Maintain a Clutter-Free Home: Establish daily habits to prevent clutter from accumulating again. Regularly declutter small areas to stay on top of things. Practice mindful consumption, only bringing in new items that you truly need or love.
